Mother Nature’s Mood Swings

Just popping in from my self-imposed exile to mention the river flooding going on in Minot, North Dakota. One of my friends and her Air Force husband live on the military base there, so I’ve been increasingly concerned upon seeing news of worsening conditions. I spoke to her by phone this morning and received assurances that she and her family are OK because the base is at a higher elevation. But she said the mayor said the city is going to be a big lake by the time the river crests.

The extremes seen in nature are mind-boggling. Yesterday, I was thinking about this year’s floods in Minot and elsewhere, and comparing them to the Dust Bowl of eight decades ago. Any given location typically experiences wide fluctuations in rainfall amounts and does just fine, but a severe surfeit or dearth is disastrous.

For the latest about what’s going on in Minot, check out the Minot Daily News or KXMC TV.
