  • 1806 – Poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning is born in Durham, England.
  • 1834 – The City of Toronto, Ontario, is incorporated with William Lyon Mackenzie as its first mayor.
  • 1852 – Newfoundland Electric Telegraph is completed between St. John’s and Carbonear.
  • 1886 – The first alternating current power plant in the United States starts in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
  • 1950 – Silly Putty is invented.
  • 1964 – G is born.
  • 1976 – American Dorothy Hamill wins the world figure skating championship.
  • 1992 – New York Yankees pitcher Pascual Perez is suspended for one year for cocaine use.
