Gift Ideas for the Hard-to-Buy-For Man

Gift boxI have been trying to come up with a unique Christmas gift for my adult son, besides the gift cards he says are all he wants. I always try to get him something he needs but hates buying for himself, something he wants but doesn’t need, and something he doesn’t know he wants but would enjoy anyway. If it’s very near Christmas, it must have the added advantage of being easy to purchase online, no shipping required. To those ends, I came up with a few ideas my readers might be able to use when shopping for the men in their lives:

  • Manpacks, the brainchild of my friend’s son and his business partner, is basically a subscription service for underwear, socks, razors, etc. Perfect for men who have neither the time nor the inclination to worry about the condition of their underwear until a body part sticks through a hole that isn’t supposed to be there, the point of Manpacks is to for men to “outsource the mundane [and] liberate ourselves.” You can sign him up for scheduled shipment and tell him what’s coming, or buy a virtual gift card that can be emailed to the recipient.
  • The Den Son is a devout beer lover (he often admonishes me to finish my beer because there are sober children in India), so I went looking for a beer-of-the-month club. I found many and ultimately settled on Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club. The Original Club offers monthly or quarterly shipments of “twelve, 12-oz. beers from two different lightly distributed U.S. Microbreweries. Each shipment includes four different beer styles, three bottles of each style.” The web site lets you print a nice gift card telling him exactly what you bought.
  • Tickets to a concert or sporting event always make a great gift. Even if the event is long after Christmas, it’s something to look forward to that might be even more enjoyable after the rush of the Christmas season is over. Most tickets you buy online can now be printed at home, so you have something to present on Christmas morning. For something a little different, try gift passes to a sports museum and perhaps a restaurant gift certificate to use before or after. If you’re a big spender, you could even send him to a weekend at a sports hall of fame, transportation and accommodations included.

For more gift ideas for men, some quite unique, check out Gifts.com, which coincidentally is featuring a microbrew of the month club, though a different one from what I recommended. You can see gift suggestions based on your man’s personality type (my son is part hipster, part geek). Happy shopping.
