Thirty-one Years Ago Today…

U.S. Embassy hostages in Iran, 1979…the U.S. Embassy building in Tehran, Iran, was stormed and seized by radicals, the staff taken hostage. It was one of the defining events of my youth, something that made me aware of my American identity at an age when the most serious issue teens were aware of was who was having an affair on General Hospital.

The siege lasted 444 days, and throughout that time every network evening newscast in the country (back when there were only ABC, NBC, and CBS) led with a story about “Day [insert number here] of the Iranian hostage crisis.” It led to the downfall of President Jimmy Carter and the election of President Ronald Reagan. The Islamic revolution that was occurring in Iran at that time gave most Americans their first (but not last) glimpse of Islamic fundamentalism. The diplomatic relationship between the two countries has never recovered.

Just thought that was worth mentioning before I go to bed.
