  • 1920 – The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote, is ratified when Tennessee become the 36th state to approve it.
  • 1935 – New Brunswickers swelter through the province’s warmest day on record, at 39.4°C (102.9°F).
  • 1968 – The Canadian National Exhibition opens on a Sunday for the first time.
  • 1976 – USSR’s Luna 24 spacecraft soft-lands on the moon.
  • 2000 – B is born.
  • 2005 – Pope Benedict XVI begins his first foreign trip as pontiff, returning to his German homeland.
