Good News on Tax Day/Tea Party Day

Tea Party protesters planning to rally in North Carolina today were informed recently that poles longer than one foot in length—including flag poles—would be banned from Tax Day Tea Parties across the state. The reason for the ban was that flag poles, sticks holding up signs, and other such objects might be used as weapons. The ban was not specific to Tea Party protests but was put in place last year and applied to all assemblies on public property.

When I first heard about it a couple days ago, I thought it was stupid. Cars can be used as weapons too, but there is no ban on people driving to such gatherings. Besides, every Tea Party protest I’ve ever seen had lots of people waving big flags on poles, and not once were the poles used as weapons of any kind. Except, possibly, in the imaginations of Tea Party opponents who really, really, really want the Tea Partiers to be vicious hateful racists (and if they aren’t, well then they’ll pose as Tea Partiers and act like vicious hateful racists!)

Apparently others complained too, and the state is now worried that the ban may be illegal. Officials have suspended enforcement “until a review can be completed.”

The Den Mother thinks that’s a good and prudent call by North Carolina officials.
