Things That Make You Scream

Aside from premeditated murder, very few criminal offenses make me want to lock someone up and throw away the key. Just below child rape on my short list is vehicular homicide while driving drunk.

That’s what happened in Tennessee two days before Christmas, when a woman who works for my company died after being hit by a drunk driver as she was crossing the street to go into the office.

Officers said Jeremy Allen Lane “had a very strong odor of an intoxicant” when he was interviewed shortly after his vehicle struck 42-year-old Susan Wood as she tried to cross Fourth Street on her way to work.

Lane, 24, made a $180,000 bond at 2:30 a.m. after his parents came up with $18,000 in cash. Four bonding companies went together to make the high bond.

Lane earlier made a bond that was related to an old case he had picked up in Juvenile Court. He was released from the jail as an officer filled out charges of vehicular homicide, DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. He was taken back into custody and made the high bond.

[ . . . ]

Lane’s criminal record includes DUI and speeding in 2004 and later cases of assault, speeding and driving on a revoked license.

I say, let him rot.
