Nifong Apologizes, Sort of

See if you can identify the problem(s) with the following apology by Durham County (NC) District Attorney Mike Nifong:

To the extent that I made judgments that ultimately proved to be incorrect, I apologize to the three students that were wrongly accused.

I found three problems. Feel free to add your own.

  1. It’s a non-apology apology, qualified as it is with "to the extent that I made judgments that ultimately proved wrong".
  2. By calling his judgments something that "ultimately proved to be incorrect," Nifong implies that there was ever a time when he judgments were valid, something that the Attorney General’s investigation found to be false.
  3. IT ISN’T THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S JOB TO MAKE JUDGMENTS. That’s up to the judge and jury. The D.A.’s job is to investigate cases and prosecute those that have merit, not to substitute his opinions for real evidence.

I wonder what career Nifong will pick next, after he is disbarred. For his sake, I hope it’s lucrative, as he’s going to end up owing a pretty penny to the three falsely accused students after they sue his sorry ass from here to kingdom come.
