Big Jim Always Gets His Man (or Woman, or Family)

Jim Hurley is the lieutenant of detectives for the Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, Police Department. I’ve known Jim’s sisters since I was a kid, I went to high school with his wife, and my parents and his parents were friends. So it’s with some amusement that my family, aided by Dad’s police scanner and local news coverage, follow “Big Jim” and the progress of some of his investigations—many of which are major sting operations.

Most recently, it appears the department found a plot of land where several marijuana plants were being cultivated. Evidence eventually led them to the home of Lori Dobbs, her boyfriend, and her two teenage children, all of whom were allegedly also growing pot plants in their home.

Detective Lt. James Hurley said that police found evidence linking the Dobbs’ and Dowd with the Gulf Street plot and, at 6 a.m., entered the home to the surprise of the four residents, who were still in their pajamas. Hurley said the smell of marijuana was overpowering as detectives came through the front door.

One of the teenagers is believed to have been dealing at the local high school. Needless to say, the home’s inhabitants are now under arrest.

If you live in Shrewsbury, subscribe to cable, and would like to stay up-to-date on the police department’s latest cases, you can catch Jim on his one-hour television show, Police Beat, on Governmental TV channel 30 at the following times:
